The Brand-Event-Access Growth Triad organizes category building around three mutually reinforcing goals. First, establish a distinctive brand belief that tells people what the activity represents. Second, produce a marquee event that generates wonder, attention, and a shared cultural moment. Third, democratize participation by reducing practical barriers and placing the activity where new users can encounter it. The brand gives the event meaning, the event creates awareness, and accessible participation converts awareness into durable adoption. Teams can use the triad as a scorecard: every major initiative should strengthen at least one point without undermining the others.

Core principles

  • 01Give the category a memorable belief and identity
  • 02Create a marquee event that concentrates attention
  • 03Make participation accessible to more people and places
  • 04Treat awareness and adoption as connected growth problems

How to run it

  1. 1

    Establish the brand

Define the enduring belief, emotional promise, and recognizable language that the category will own.

Pro tip Frame the belief around a human motivation larger than the product itself.

Watch out Do not substitute a clever slogan for a meaningful position.

  2. 2

    Create a marquee event

Design a recurring competition or spectacle that people anticipate and associate with the category.

Pro tip Give the event enough production value and stakes to create genuine wonder.

Watch out A routine tournament without magnitude will not become a cultural landmark.

  3. 3

    Democratize participation

Expand where, how, and by whom the activity can be practiced. Remove equipment, venue, instruction, and community barriers.

Pro tip Seed access through schools and local communities that can produce future participants.

Watch out Awareness without accessible participation creates spectators but not a durable category.

  4. 4

    Connect the three goals

Use the event to express the brand and direct interested audiences toward accessible ways to participate.

Pro tip Track brand recognition, event reach, and active participation as one system.

Watch out Do not manage the three goals as unrelated campaigns.

In the wild

Launching a new community sport

A league positions its sport around lifelong competition, launches a highly produced annual championship, and supplies equipment and instruction to schools and community centers. Every event broadcast directs viewers to a local venue directory and beginner program.

The category gains a clear identity, a recognizable cultural moment, and a growing participant base.

Common mistakes

Optimizing only for awareness

A large campaign cannot produce sustained adoption if interested people have nowhere to participate.

Running an ordinary marquee event

Calling an event marquee does not make it significant; it needs stakes, production, characters, and spectacle.

Is it for you?

Best for

It is best for emerging sports, communities, platforms, and categories that need both spectators and active users.

Not ideal for

It is not ideal for mature categories whose primary constraint is retention or operational efficiency.
